Modus Operandi, Latin for “method of operating,” is a non-profit organization, (as per the French law of 1901), created in 2006, whose goal is to develop and diffuse an analysis of the complexity of international relations by means of research and education.
Its activity consists, as well, of creating a research dynamic not only at the local level, with university actors and regional practitioners, but also at the international level by way of online courses and meetings in the studied countries.
Modus Operandi is a recently-established organization. Its current projects are the following :
The « Transition » Program, that is the result of a partnership with the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation for the Progress of Humankind, the School of Peace and Modus Operandi. The program sheds light on the technical obstacles of transitions such as they appear today in countries like Afghanistan. Actions undertaken by the international community follow outlines that are too stereotypical and simplistic and that do not take into account the socio-cultural complexity of the countries where they are being applied. The goal for 2006-7 is to further develop the analysis, to substantiate it, and to open it up for debate (in Paris and in South Africa) with the goal of forming a set of guidelines for the future. These analyses will be published on the Institute’s website for a new debate on governance (IRG) and on the Irenees website on the Art of Peace.
Online courses on the various themes of civil conflict transformation and of the types of conflict transformation. This activity is run in partnership with « Network University ». Network University is a center of online teaching located in Amsterdam, in Holland. Established in May 1999, it has transformed itself into a principal actor in online education in the area of conflict transformation.
Geopolitical courses at Stendhal University III in Grenoble and courses on structural violence and positive peace at the University of Innsbruck.
Project on sustainable development and the social responsibility of companies/corporations in partnership with the School for Higher Business Studies in Grenoble. Modus Operandi develops a pedagogy destined to increase awareness of this issue using innovated methods. The confrontation/encounter with different approaches will be at the heart of this methodology. Coming into contact with the logic of three actors identified as recipients of the problematic will allow the students to measure the stakes and the constraints : these actors form a triangle made up of companies, territorial collectives and civil society.
Modus Operandi’s offices are located within the European Department of the Pierre Mendés University of France. This geographic proximity facilitates the synergy between the research activities and our organization’s goals which are to capitalize on this collaboration with concrete projects.
