Juristes-Solidarités based its action on an official statement : that the law could be an essential tool for social transformation, on the condition that the persons for whom it was destined might truly adapt it as their own, by learning to understand it, to incorporate it into their daily lives, to use it and, if necessary, to promote its evolution.
Worldwide, numerous widely-used practices give witness as well to the capacity of people and groups to invest in the field of law with the goal to better assist their autonomy and the lifestyle that they aspire to obtain.
Collective movements of usage and claim rights, up close peaceful conflict resolution (mediation…), democratic community organizations, paralegal acts of learning…
Created in 1989, Juristes-Solidarités, made up of activists, lawyers and non-lawyers, concerned with favoring the emergence and/or reinforcement of these practices as a whole, following the execution, over several years, of an activities program whose objectives are:
To identify, measure, and substantiate, in the South as well as the North, the practice of the use of law, indeed the establishment of laws initiated by the population, or by associations or groups that develop a work of information and learning about judicial and legal acts that concern the most deprived populations ;
To promote exchange of experience between the different actors who use these practices via the organization of regional meetings, the diffusion of information (via various publications as well as the website www.agirledroit.org), the support of the implementation of collective projects (with provision of procedural support and/or moderation) ;
To increase awareness and educate, in France and in Europe, various targeted audiences (students of all age groups, social participants, elected officials, general public) about the role that law can effectively play in the exercise of citizenship and developmental processes carried out by the population.
