CINEP’s work for peace in Columbia is based on respect for life, the fundamental ethic of its partners and initiatives.
The “Center for Investigation and Popular Education” - CINEP - was created in Columbia by the Society of Jesus, - the “Jesuits” - of the Catholic Church, in the 1960’s. Columbia’s approach to problem-solving in terms of “progress” and “development” conformed to the tendencies of that time period. From its conception - and in relation with its choice of Latin-American Catholic church at the time - CINEP chose to work for social justice, respect of Human rights and peace-building, putting itself, as well, at the service of the most destitute of Columbian society.
Since then, CINEP has worked in association with other local and international actors on the major problems of the Andean region, and, more globally, of Latin America : agrarian issues, social inequalities, drug issues, the democratization of political regimes, the respect of Human rights, the pacification of Central America, et cetera.
As Columbian internal armed conflict settled in and worsened, CINEP increasingly turned towards an understanding of the war in Columbia, non-violent civil resistance, mediation, the establishment of networks with the international community - notably with Latin America and Europe - the elaboration of peace propositions, the conception of social reconstruction projects, peace education and culture, et cetera.
At the beginning of this 21st century, CINEP is considered to be one of the principal actors of the reconstruction of peace in Columbia ; it continues to propound a responsible, partnership-based initiative to Columbian actors and international partners, all the while giving it meaning : the reform of social relationships for building peace.
