USIP is America’s nonpartisan institute to promote national security and global stability by reducing violent conflicts abroad. Our staff guide peace talks and advise governments; train police and religious leaders; and support community groups opposing extremism—all to help troubled countries solve their own conflicts peacefully.

In working to prevent and reduce violent conflict, the U.S. Institute of Peace combines research, analysis and field experience to strengthen the capacity of policymakers and other professionals to respond on some of the most critical global challenges of the 21st Century.   • Resources: Grounded in USIP’s original mandate from Congress, Public Education at USIP serves the American people, providing resources and initiatives for K-12 students and educators, as well as others interested in learning about and working for peace.

  • Courses: The USIP Academy provides a wide range of courses for international affairs practitioners at USIP headquarters, online, and overseas, helping global peacebuilders transform violent conflicts in their communities.

  • Events: As an independent, nonpartisan national thought leader with more than 30 years of experience, the U.S. Institute of Peace convenes people from various sides of an issue and facilitates constructive solutions to prevent and reduce violent conflict. Its events help shape public policy and priorities to advance peaceful solutions to conflict and strengthen international security.

  • Experts: On any given day, a third of U.S. Institute of Peace experts are deployed, deploying or returning from active conflict zones. They conduct training and research and provide analysis and resources to partners in conflict zones and in Washington D.C., working with government and civil society across the globe. They specialize in many of the world’s violent conflicts and in issues such as the role of religion, countering violent extremism, advancing rule of law, electoral violence, governance, peace processes and the use of technology in peace and conflict.

The U.S. Institute of Peace operates on the ground in some of the world’s most dangerous places to provide training, guidance, resources and analysis for those working to prevent or reduce violent conflict.
